Ganzekraal Coastal Resort is a municipal campsite that we have a slightly ambiguous feeling about despite its exquisite location on the west coast.
On the positive side, it is brilliantly positioned very close to Cape Town and is situated right on the ocean with a lovely tidal pool for safe swimming. There are plenty of cottages and campsites, all of which are situated in close proximity to the sea with incredible views over the bay, rocks and ocean. The complex also seems to be well-equipped with a fairly decent sized conference facility, communal lapa area, wedding venue, restaurant and bar.
However, this is where it starts to lose its appeal. The size of the complex and its focus on group events and getaways means that what one might hope to be a quiet camping escape in summer could very well coincide with a wedding, work function or family reunion. That’s not why we go camping. In addition, Ganzekraal’s proximity to Cape Town and its unique location on the coast mean that it is popular and usually incredibly busy. For some, this might be comforting, but for us, we prefer somewhere a little quieter where nature dominates us.
*Note that feedback on this campsite has been mixed. What has been consistent however is that the campsite is noisy and loud music and late nights have become the norm. If you are not into festive camping, this may not be for you.
