When we first visited Kokerboomkloof, we felt quite overwhelmed. Not only was it difficult to leave De Hoop for somewhere new, we were also not quite prepared for the very thing we wanted: absolute remoteness. Kokerboomkloof was silent, abandoned, strange and exposed. Being the only people around for miles is something quite confrontational despite being something so desired.

Contemplation aside, it’s a great destination if you seriously wish for silence. And in some ways it exemplifies our idea of the Richtersveld- an ancient landscape that feels like it knows a million stories and harbours a million secrets.

Need to know: All you have at Kokerboomkloof are rustic toilets. There is no water whatsover, so bring everything with you: water, a shower etc.
